The chemical also contains an acid to break down the calcium carbonate within the top layer of the stone, attaching the fluorosilicons and creating a new compound called calcium fluorosilicate.
Since re-crystallization consists of wax, it is easily worn off and needs to be re-applied. Not only from the dirt, but from the company’s steel wool pads that they used to re-polish.

Marble is a metamorphic rock, having been subject to tremendous heat and pressure to the point where various fossilized materials, along with the original limestone and sundry minerals, have become re-crystallized unlike man-made tile floors. Marble surfaces show wear sooner than granite, but can be restored with honing and polishing more easily. If honing or polishing, use extreme care not to leave swirls and do not run until the powder has dried.

Marble Travertine Restoration by heavensentfloorcare.com
A portion of people are motivated by price when selecting a company. A maintenance or janitorial company will not have the proper tools or experience to restore natural stone. The investment of knowledge, equipment and experience needed to understand and work with stone properly is greater than what your average janitorial company can afford to pay for qualified technicians to stay with the company. In addition they refer to a polish as an effective sealant that keeps the porous marble from absorbing liquid spills and stains. The process they article cites of sealing appears to be a form of “crystallization” which you want to avoid at all costs. To understand how these ingredients react with marble, one needs to understand the makeup (natural composition) of marble, itself.
Carbonate, along with other minerals, make up what we know as marble. If you have any doubts, place a drop of re-crystallization fluid on a piece of marble, wait just 30 seconds and wipe it off.
All contained an acid of one type or another and almost all contained varying percentages of waxes and acrylics. When an acid is dropped on marble it will burn and etch the surface leaving a pitted, dull spot. The bond between the calcium and the carbonate is broken, producing water and carbon dioxide gas and the calcium carbonate is destroyed. Do not let any company perform marble and travertine restoration services with the crystallization process.

Marble Polishing Process by specializedfloorcare.com
Marble is a natural stone that comes from the metamorphism of carbonate, sedimentary rocks.
During the metamorphism, re-crystallization occurs in the carbonate mineral grains. The original sedimentary structures of the rock as it existed prior to this change are often destroyed or changed. Marble is a very soft rock that scratches very easy making it a high maintenance material. Cause of surface damage, most of the damage is caused by daily traffic, furniture movement and improper cleaning products and or cleaning products. In the bathroom, toothpaste and bathroom cleaning products cause etching, in the kitchen citrous or vinegar based products will also cause etching. This is depending on how much or how deep the scratches on the floor or counters are. It is necessary to remove deep scratches and lippage from marble flooring. It is used to remove the scratches caused by the grinding process.
The rock that is produced through this process has interlocking carbonated crystals. The good news is that when a marble floor, marble countertop or marble becomes damaged it can be repaired or restored at a fraction of the replacement cost. If there are broken tiles or broken grout lines, this is an indicator of possible faulty installation.
Use a neutral ph non rinse marble cleaning product to safely clean marble. If the grinding and honing was done properly, this final step should render a like new polish look. I also had a large tile floor cleaned where the grout had been stained.

Re Crystallization Vs. Standard Marble Polishing by countertopspecialty.com
They apply a chemical that bonds with the marble and creates a lustrous to shiny surface that is easily renewed. So, if my arguments aren’t enough to dissuade you from doing it again in your new home, then consider that no factory in the world uses recrystallization as a method to “polish” the stone.
It’s unfortunate for consumers because it’s only natural to think that anyone selling or installing marble ought to know what’s right, but they often don’t.
It looks like it has very fine hairy cracks underneath that were not there before and they are filled with a powdery white residue. Perhaps the contractor did not use the traditional mechanical refinishing method of grinding, smoothing, and re-polishing the stone. It’s just applying a coating in an attempt to achieve a certain look. If the coating is applied incorrectly, then you could get some awful-looking results.
Marble Polishing By Pam Serve | Duration 1 Minutes 14 Seconds
The promise sounds good, but in practice, coatings can cause more problems than they solve and often end up needing more maintenance attention than the granite or marble itself. But 99% of the time traditional, time-tested refinishing, repair, or restoration methods are the way to go. They have noticed that the stone surface lasted longer this time around compared to their previous stone restoration company, which had used traditional polishing methods. It last longer and resisit dirt and stains better than the powder polishing alone. Most marble restoration companies use oxalic acid to polish marble and natural stone. Maybe a crystallized marble is less absorbent, but the difference is minimal and it certainly doesn’t trump all the potential problems of crystallization.
Maybe my contractor was great at crystallization or maybe the people putting it down are trying to scare everyone into the much more expensive old fashion polishing. It provides the best finish without any of the various possible (often probable) side effects of crystallization. You may get lucky, but if it goes sour can’t be too surprised. As you stated, traditional stone re-polishing is the best solution. We have slabs on counters and in shower, but only the floors have the problem.
Foot traffic will wear down polished surfaces, improper/infrequent cleaning can be an issue, using harsh cleaning products (which are nearly all common household cleaners), or other physical and chemical damage could be at cause. Especially since there are many unskilled people using crystallization that lack any real knowledge of stone, solving problems can be a real dilemma. Also, once you crystallize it is troublesome to go back to a natural finish. And why mess with a problematic method like crystallization when traditional polishing methods are tried and true and don’t change your stone into some chemical-ized surface. I stumbled upon this page and felt compelled to respond to some of the claims that are made in this article.
Crystallization can make the floors look very nice, however, even when done correctly crystallization introduces new potential problems that you will never have if you simply have your stone restored in traditional fashion by a skilled professional. When it was placed about a year before, after grouting, the floor had several spots all over. Those plastic looking floors that are falling apart, are crystallized nightly. I don’t know exactly what process he used but it would take one man about 8 hours (1400 sf of marble).
If acid gets on the marble and marks it, you just buff on more chemical and voila, it’s new again! Trouble is that most consumers are not aware of the pitfalls of marble crystallization compared to traditional marble polishing. It creates a problematic hard chemical shell on your marble trapping acids (used in the process) in the marble. So, understand once you crystallize you no longer have a “marble” surface. Traditional, proven methods for marble cleaning, care and marble repair can no longer be used. Yes, it’s been around for a while , but that doesn’t make it good or beneficial. The people that have it done simply don’t know any better (no reason they or you should of course) and get sold by the sales pitch which seems fine and dandy.
Proponents of the procedure and the sales literature make it seem like it’s the latest greatest thing, but the main reason they like it is because it requires very little experience or knowledge of marble. They all use standard mechanical grinding, smoothing, and polishing to finish the surface and make the marble shiny.
Plenty of stories and myths floating around about marble and natural stone care and repair are just bogus. If you compare the side of the stone with the top you can see a big difference. Based on your description of the results, that’s what it sounds like to me. A coating will not solve the underlying problem of why the granite needed refinishing in the first place. Coatings have improved a lot and are an appropriate choice in limited and fairly rare circumstances. Marble polishing with a 5x powder provide great results, and requires sealing of the stone.
The inexperienced marble polisher or the lazy marble polishers are the problem. The problems experienced by homeowners due to crystallization are the very reason that crystallization is controversial and has a bad name.
As you know, marble is actually pretty dense, does not stain easily (it etches easily and this is confused for staining) and “polished” marble is even more stain-resistant. The fact that a crystallized marble won’t take a sealer doesn’t prove that crystallization is better. Some of the higher traffic areas have lost some shine but most of the floor still looks great. I don’t think any respectable stone pro out there is recommending traditional marble polishing because it is more expensive. If anything the re-crystallizers make a higher percentage profit and are telling a bit of a “story”. We have a large master bath and it goes into my master closet. Once received we’ll respond with a request for photos of the areas of marble floor tile in question to evaluate. However, it can be done very poorly (like traditional polishing) and look horribly as well. While natural stone can always be restored to a brand new finish, crystallized marble floors change the surface layer of the marble into something other than natural marble and maintaining this surface can become much more problematic than natural stone. You get some novices using traditional methods as well, but pretenders get weeded out pretty quick.
Our thinking and that of many stone professionals is that you should do as little as possible to stone. I have crystallized floors for over twenty years and have never had a problem with the process of crystallization. These precautions will enhance your chances of finding a reputable floor restoration contractor. True restoration/polishing lasts longer and gives greater clarity than crystallization. If a floor is properly powder-polished, it will last much longer with a greater degree of clarity. They came back and rebuffed or some such thing to take the swirls out. Document everything you can, the damage they caused, poor results, etc.
Dangers Of Stone Restoration Part 2 by heavensentfloorcare.com
From them, it was learned that all the re-crystallization products contained a fluorosilicate compound. Carbonate, along with other minerals, make up what we know as marble. First used in 1883, fluorosilicate compounds were used in an attempt to preserve marble statues that were crumbling.
The term “re-crystallization” implies that a substance has been crystallized a second time.
In geology, re-crystallization takes place under great pressure at high temperatures deep in the earth and over thousands of years.
We can therefore assume that the term “re-crystallization” is used only as a marketing term. All contained an acid of one type or another and almost all contained varying percentages of waxes and acrylics. In our next update we will provide some pictures of floors that we have discovered that were damaged by this “crystallization” process.
Understanding Marble Crystallization by surfacedynamics.wordpress.com
The right side photo shows our test area after grinding away the crystallization, making grout repairs and refinishing with diamond tools.
Obviously our goal is to find the most efficient and cost effective way possible to produce a high shine at a competitive price for our clients. What we have discovered is that satisfying all of these criteria is a daunting task, but not impossible! Many companies utilize crystallization to create a deep brilliant shine on polished marble floors. Although it has its limits dependent upon the condition of the floor prior to application, the process is fairly simple. Although there are variations in formula, all crystallizing liquids contain three primary components: fluorosilicates, acids and acrylics (wax ).
When crystallizer comes into contact with marble, the acidic component of the crystallizer breaks apart the marble’s surface layer of calcium carbonate and releases calcium ion. Crystallization produces a finished appearance that is more glossy than reflective, but the result can be a great look at a great price if the work is done correctly. The rate at which this can occur is determined by the level of calcium carbonate in the stone and frequency of re-crystallization. Each layer will develop scratches and wear patterns that are covered with a new layer. Increased efforts to restore a shine will often result in friction overheating which produces a texture similar to that of an orange peel. When it reaches this stage, it becomes necessary to grind or hone away the crystallized surface and begin the process all over again. At that point, it will then be necessary to call in a professional marble refinishing company to perform the proper restoration procedures. Using tiered levels of abrasives, the process can begin with a very low grit for removing large amounts of material and then progressing through individual stages until the desired level of shine is achieved.
The highly reflective shine is the result of a 3000 grit diamond polish without any sealer or topical application. These methods have included powders, chemicals, diamond pads, and resin bound diamonds in addition to various types of equipment and technique. In keeping with our company philosophy, we also consider sustainability, appearance retention, and environmental impact.
We are constantly improving, but we feel above all else that educating our clients is most important. When completed by a trained technician, the finished results can be absolutely beautiful! A liquid is sprayed on the floor and then buffed with a steel wool pad at low speeds until a shine becomes apparent. It is much faster than traditional diamond refinishing and can be completed with basic floor care equipment.
The fluorosilicate compound in crystallizer then attaches itself to the calcium ion to form calcium fluorosilicate. This chemical reaction combined with friction from the steel wool buff results in an glossy impervious film on the stone’s surface. This all sounds good, but there are a few important factors to consider with regard to life cycle costs and sustainability. When a stone is crystallized, the surface is completely sealed and moisture is trapped. This break down of the stone will begin in veins first and then spread in the form of pocket break-outs and spalling. The second thing to consider is that the calcium fluorosilicate layers will build-up with each re-crystallization.
Eventually the surface is so thick with crystallization that it develops an artificial and sometimes amber or fogged appearance. Crystallizer cannot be stripped like wax or other topical finishes and the technicians providing the service may not have the equipment, knowledge or experience to properly prepare the floor. The results are amazing and without the long term risks associated with crystallizing, but it can be very time consuming and expensive. The end result is trust and respect which wins every time!

However that’s a misconception because granite and marble are very different in their geology. If you are able to scratch the stone it is either marble or limestone.
Marble is a metamorphic rock containing calcium carbonate, which reacts to acids. Marble is also sensitive to acidic/citric foods like lemon and vinegar, so it’s not always a good choice for kitchen/breakroom counter tops. Before caring for stone surfaces, make sure you know what type of stone you’re dealing with.

Method Statement Marble Buffing Polishing by dehobbybeurs.be
Crystallization (also known as re- crystallization or vitrification) is a method of creating a gloss on calcium bearing stone floors such as marble, limestone, and travertine. Just take some quantity of baking soda like 45-50 grams and mix it with water. Each method may not be effective on all stone types and the use of more than one may be necessary. You can polish the flooring either by dry sanding or wet sanding.
While it brings natural beauty to your home, it requires special care to prevent damage and stains, which occur easily due to marble’s porous surface. The step honing for marble floor polishing restoration repair brings smoothness to the marble floor. Use special silicone-carbide sandpaper in range of grits to slowly work out those imperfections. Marble does fade its lustre over time and needs proper maintenance whether used for flooring or countertops.
Marble is a beautiful and strong statement of luxury, especially as a flooring. Crystallization is a very good method for regular stone maintenance.
