Maybe a texture, but keep the pattern subdued and let the carrera marble vanity be the centerpiece. Really, marble is only an issue when installing it as a kitchen countertop. Kitchen countertops are in constant contact with acids, so it is impossible to prevent dull and discolored spots from etching on a marble kitchen countertop. It’s just a cosmetic issue, which wasn’t much an issue in past decades and centuries when marble kitchen countertops were very common. So, for most people the extra marble cleaning and maintenance hassle required with a marble kitchen countertop becomes frustrating. Of course, the best solution in mis-cut or mis-measured installations is to start over and install a piece that fits correctly.

You could consider installing the backsplash on top of the cabinets, so the vanity top butts up against the backsplash instead of the backsplash sitting on top. You could try to get a fabricator to cut you a strip to fit the gap, but then you’d have a seam and almost certain color mismatch. I have read that marble is both durable and can stain easily which is confusing. It would be in a bathroom that will probably be a high traffic area as the kids get older and we spread out a little more. Raw or honed marble will stain, but polished marble is a different story. Polished marble can stain if you leave something on it for a few hours, but generally it is not a problem. Polished marble will corrode upon contact with acids (many foods and some bath products) and alkaline cleaning chemicals. Silestone or any quartz countertop is to use specially formulated stone cleaners and not common harsh household cleaners. In practice, the frequency and thoroughness of your cleaning routine are far more important factors influencing bacterial growth and/or overall cleanliness than microban or porosity.

Could you think of any tiles that might compliment carrara marble and also warm up a color scheme? You just need to go to a stone warehouse or tile shop and look at samples to see what you like.

You should use a honed finish instead of polished marble floor tile for safe footing. Even more so when they didn’t know about this issue before installing marble. You don’t get much etching in a bathroom and when it does occur it is most often on the countertop, not the floor.

Be sure to use only products safe for cleaning marble especially around the toilet where nearly all cleaners will damage and etch the marble if (rather when) it is dripped or spilled on the floor. In a small space like a powder bath, that could get cluttered real quick and look too busy. I suggest that your time and money would be best spent if you simply returned the current too short piece and get one that fits as it should. This would work if you have a wall/backsplash on both ends and could use a 3/4 inch backsplash, which wouldn’t look too odd. This is really something a creative fabricator or handyman would have to look at to determine the best solution if replacement is not an option. Polishing marble (or any stone) changes the surface tension and makes it much less absorbent. Most mild etch marks can be removed using a marble polishing powder, but if the damage is severe then you may need a pro.

Used in a wide array of commercial and residential applications, granite is ideal for tile floors, bathroom walls and countertops, as well as exterior applications such as pavers and wall cladding.

This metamorphic rock is comprised primarily of calcium carbonate and other minerals that create a wide variety of colors. Tiles can be split and cut-to-size with only the natural cleft surface, or manufacturers will add value by calibrating the material to ensure a consistent thickness throughout the piece. Slabs and tiles are cut from blocks with the veining (regular cut) or across the veining (cross-cut).

Carrara, a popular choice for floor tiles and on countertops, has an aesthetically pleasing white or grayish-blue tone.

Carrara marble specifically is favored because of its veining, which gives it an artistic flair and has the added benefit of camouflaging any wear and tear that the tiles might sustain. The polished look of marble adds a refined quality to any room, blending well with classic or modern décor.

Ceramic Tile Flooring: Pros Cons Comparisons by countertopspecialty.com

Ceramic tile has considerable benefits without some of the concerns and/or costs of other floor tile materials. Installation anywhere in your home from countertops to bathroom floor tile to showers, walls and outdoor patios or entryways is possible.

It is not considered a high end or upscale flooring, but it certainly presents well and the cons are minimal. Ceramic does not etch and you can use any standard household cleaner. The simple care and maintenance is also an advantage for ceramic; however, marble, travertine and limestone will be easier to repair if chipped, scratched or otherwise damaged than ceramic tile. Like ceramic, porcelain provides a wide range of colors and styles, shapes and edges and is easy to maintain and clean. As you can see , ceramic makes an excellent floor tile that’s long-lasting, easy to maintain and relatively cheap to install. Ceramic tile flooring will still look very nice and all considered, is a great bargain.

Ceramic tile flooring is durable, easy to clean and maintain, water and stain-proof and extremely versatile. Of course, hot water will work just as well on marble as on ceramic tile flooring. The big advantage of porcelain is that the color is consistent throughout the tile (like stone) so if porcelain is chipped or scratched it can be repaired much more easily than ceramic.

Tips Tricks To Lay Marble Basketweave Floor Tile by thediyplaybook.com

Some may be lighter or darker depending on the box, so it’s important to see all of the pieces laid out as you go. However, you want to hide your cuts on the walls that aren’t as noticeable (like under the vanity or behind the toilet).

Because this tile doesn’t have any straight edges, we had to make cuts on every single edge piece. I highly recommend doing this, because after looking at the pattern for so many hours your eyes may start to cross! This helps because it gives you a good grip to push it through the blade. Marble soaks up water, so be sure to dry off your pieces after all of your cuts. This is a must whenever you use the wet saw, but it’s especially important for this type of tile. Even though this tile is 12×12, it still took a long time to make all of the cuts as we dry fit both the shower area and the main bathroom area.

For those areas, you’ll need to use individual stones that are cut to fit the exact area.

It dries out really quickly, and making a huge batch never worked well for us. And the consistency is a tough one to describe…some people say peanut butter, others say pancake batter…those seem like 2 very different textures to us!

The notch size of your trowel is dependent on the size of your tile, so make sure you buy the correct one for your project.

Because our grout lines were small (1/16″) we went with unsanded grout. Again, only make enough that you can work with in about 20 minutes or so. If you wipe too early (or with too much water), you can mess up the final outcome. And reaallllly wring out your sponge so it doesn’t get too much moisture on your tiles. Use a caulk gun, keep things as clean as possible, and you’ll be done in no time! A detailed tutorial on how to install marble basketweave floor tile. We can’t live without a to-do list, use way too many emojis, and believe anyone can create a home that they love!

Each piece of marble has so much character and the pattern is elegant, yet fun! Plus, marble can be more difficult to cut than porcelain or ceramic because it is so delicate…so you have to extra careful when cutting it. But for our next tiling project, we’ll at least have all of the main tools to get the job done. I highly recommend unboxing all of your tiles and choosing from different boxes as you lay it all down.

In the main area, we first thought we would start on the farthest wall near the toilet and work our way out of the room. We started in the shower area because we figured it would be easiest to tackle since it’s a small space. If you have more tile projects on your to-do list, consider buying a wet saw. Plus, with the amount of days we’ve been tiling, there’s no way we could rent one out for that long of a time period.

Countertop Fabrication And Installation Ez Tile & Marble | Duration 2 Minutes 10 Seconds

Just take your time so you don’t damage any tiles as you go. These cuts were often too small for the wet saw, so we used a handy dandy little tool to create the perfect pieces. We could sand down pieces so they fit into corners and nooks perfectly, and we also used it to shave cuts that didn’t leave a perfectly smooth edge. Our best technique was to always start with water first, then mix in the thinset powder, and stir until we got to the right consistency. Once it’s all mixed up, let it slake (rest) for 10 minutes before you work with it. We made sure everything looked flat and level as we went, and also used a grout float to push the tile down and into the thinset the best we could.

This is just when you take some thinset and put it on the back of your tile to make sure it gets enough adhesive on it. We kept toothpicks handy to get rid of any thinset that oozed through the spaces.

It’s also important to choose unsanded grout when you’re going with a stone like marble, because sanded grout can scratch it. I then took my grout float, mushed the grout into the cracks, and spread it out as much as possible. My recommendation is to have a bucket of clean water handy, and at least 2-3 sponges so you can keep swapping them out as you wipe. Be sure to choose caulk in the same color and texture as your grout. We used silicone in the shower (for extra moisture protection) and regular caulk in the main room.

Once you choose the material you like, our fabricators measure your cabinets and start fabrication. This is by far the most expensive countertop solution; but you have no grout joints to worry about, the final product looks clean and seamless, it’s installed for you (no extra mess or contractors to coordinate), and it will add to the resale value of your home.

As a strong, dense material that never needs sealing, porcelain is a great product for countertops.

They tend to cost a little more per square foot than smaller tiles, but far less than a solid surface countertop. A well-used kitchen countertop with hot, heavy pots and pans requires a more durable tile, while a master bathroom countertop can have more delicate ceramic tiles. However, the durability of the different types of natural stone affects where they can be used. While not as susceptible to acid damage as marble or limestone, slate is still softer and easier to scratch than granite.

This variation makes it hard to create a level surface, which can be problematic if you plan to set things on your counter. Think of the daily use that your countertop will receive when selecting your material. Some metallic tiles will patina when wet or show smudges and fingerprints.

The process of getting a solid surface countertop is simple. A large slab of material is cut to size; the edges are polished; holes are cut for sinks, faucets, cooktops, etc.; and then the final product is installed in your home. Large format tiles are desirable for the reduced number of total grout joints in your installation. You can install them yourself to reduce costs or hire a contractor.

Which type you can use on your countertop depends upon the expected wear you’ll put it through. Remember: use a stone-friendly cleaner on your natural stone countertops. Granite is one of the most durable natural stones, and is one of the most popular countertop materials. We always recommend sealing natural stone to protect it from staining. Slate and quartzite tiles are highly variegated with a vast selection of colors.

Most slate and quartzite tiles have a natural, clefted finish and can vary in depth. We recommend a honed or polished slate or quartzite for a smooth, level surface. Certain glass tiles and mosaics are very easy to scratch, and should only be used on low-wear countertops. With mosaics, you’ll have a lot of grout, which can be hard to keep clean.

Electroplated diamond coating will wear off if the tool gets too hot.

Those who complain are most likely inexperienced and are using too little water and too much pressure. I have mine mounted in a tripod drill press and put a bit of pressure on it but mostly just let the weight of the machine do the work.

All you need is to keep the drill bit in place until it makes the initial marks. You can manually guide the drill bit with wet sponge. Would be nice to see a version with a drill bit in the middle to start things off real easily. I cut through in just a couple minutes going in from an angle using one hand as a fixed (which is key) fulcrum and the other as a lever.
