During the polishing process, the first steps are focused on removing all excess resin poured on top of the slab, leaving only the resin that has filled into the cracks or the pits. One of the first noticeable affects of the resin is a darkening effect on the whole surface of the slab. This byproduct enhances the color of the slab and allows for a better polishing effect as a final result. Applying these products will allow you to permanently match the two colors with one application. Before being treated, the surface of a granite slab has to be honed; to allow the surface of the material to evenly absorb the resin. This process requires special convection ovens or two to three days in favorable dry working conditions. Nowadays, there are hundreds of different epoxy systems for granite, with different physical characteristics. After the system is completely cured (usually it takes up to 24 hours, depending on the system and the equipment used) the slab is ready to be polished. In this way, the epoxy resin will not form a film on top of the granite, and it will be present only in the interspaces and in the micro-fissures. There are special products on the market for enhancing the color of granite and marble. Beware, though, of easy solutions such as mineral oil or a cheap color enhancer. Another question is whether the epoxy resin is safe for kitchen countertop surfaces, and whether they will be damaged if a homeowner were to place a hot item on the surface. As far as high temperature goes, the epoxy system has the tendency to soften up in presence of high temperatures. Even if there is a large patch of epoxy glue visible, it will go back to its original status as soon as the temperature goes back down to a normal level. The resin has the double effect of assuring the strength of the slabs and providing a clean feeling of touch to the homeowners and other end final users. My concerns are that it’s ugly & that it could worsen in time, especially being where water will get on it & being where sun will be hitting it daily. When you say 50%, is that 50% of the total cost (including labor) or just the cost of the stone?

What a coincidence that the “fissure” showed up at one of the weakest points of the countertop. We have had granite in our former home and we never had any obvious filled in areas.

They are visible and when we run our hand over them you can feel them, in addition if you run your finger nail over them it catches. Well as you can imagine that didn’t sit well with my husband and he called back and said that wasn’t acceptable and the guy then said he would call his granite repair guy to come out next week. I will not have the opportunity to lay eyes on the car till it arrives. But the analogy kinda falls apart there since cars aren’t installed. I think what’s got me riled up at this point isn’t even the granite as much as it is that they installed it without asking me to inspect it and then their “screw you” attitude so far. Additionally we had to prove that the fabricator and installer had lied about the timeframe in which we had contacted them, which we did through our phone bill.

I am hoping you are right that is is just to much of a hassle and they will just write it off. Their demeanor was 180 degrees from that of their sales rep/project mgr.

I read your posts with interest and hope the replacement of your granite kitchen countertops worked out to your satisfaction.

The owners were good guys and good business owners, in my opinion. This was a pass through opening from my kitchen to my dining room with a small overhang. The installers said the cabinet was uneven which contributed to the breakage. The corner section actually broke on about the third or fourth time they tried to re-positon the countertop after cutting out of section of trim molding so that countertop abutted cleanly against the kitchen wall. If you study for it, you will probably always be able to find it, but a person buying your home or their home inspector will not. The installation process went smoothly according to my wife. No brackets were applied and no where in the instructions or template does it state to apply bracelets. A properly installed counter should be able to support this amount of gentle stress without totally breaking. Should they have stated in instructions, template, or contract about needing brackets per certain amount of overhang? Fortunately, with that much movement and color, your top may probably be reassembled fairly inconspicuously.

I would not allow these clueless hacks back into my home under any circumstances. Do you think it’s wise for me to first contact the granite company and see if they will replace the counter with a new slab which has less overhang. You may want to contact them to tell them what happened, that you’ll be making an insurance claim, and see what their reaction is. I honestly feel like you have saved us a additional stress and cost. We are also going to reduce the hangover to 8 inches, not 15inches nor 12 inches. Use exterior glue plywood or cement backer board as the underlay material. Spans should always be kept to a minimum to prevent deflection of the stone. Consideration should be given to the type of stone being used (fragility) and the intended use (load bearing) when assessing support needs. For all other half-wall overhangs, corbels are required to support the overhang where the bracket depth is 3/4 of the overhang depth. Dropping things on properly installed tops should not cause cracks anyway.

He ground it out & put in some filler the same color as the granite. Give them a choice to replace the top or tell them you can live with it for 50% off.

Fissures are often filled with stone or contamination; yours has adhesive. They said it wasn’t up to them (i was speaking to the stone cutting guys) and we would need to speak to customer support. What worked for me was to invite the owners of the company to my home, establish a rapport and ask for their help. For my wife and me, we felt that if the situation was not remedied, every time we saw the flaw, we would be reminded of how shabbily we had been treated. It’s saddening to hear you weren’t given this opportunity to do so. He said they filled it in before they came out but again he never communicated that to us before coming out.
