Water level settings offer energy savings, and dispensers disburse products like fabric softener at the right point in the wash cycle. The load size is automatically measured and adjusts settings and water levels accordingly.
How To Build A Laundry Cabinet With A Countertop by hgtv.com
With this project, you can upgrade your laundry room into an attractive work and storage space with cabinets and a tiled countertop. Leave about 6 inches for the water-hose connections and the dryer vent.Cut the two side pieces of the cabinet from this piece of oak plywood.
These will serve as supports for the bottom shelves of the cabinet. Attach a couple of 1-by-4’s to the cabinet to act as supports for the countertop. Attach the cabinet to the wall with 2-inch screws, securing the screws into the studs. Measure around the perimeter of the base cabinet to establish the lengths of trim. Secure the trim to the cabinet with a hammer or pneumatic nailer and finishing nails.
How To Install Laundry Closet Countertop | Duration 4 Minutes 44 Seconds
Throw down a drop cloth and apply stain, starting from the inside of the cabinet. Spread adhesive on the countertop with a small notched trowel. Use a slight twisting motion to seat tiles into the adhesive. Keep the reservoir in the saw full, and change the water occasionally to get rid of sediment that could clog the circulating pump. Install the new sink and faucet, and attach the doors to the front of the cabinet. Measure the depth of the washer and dryer to determine the depth of the countertop. Measure for the height of the counter, leaving about an inch between the counter and the appliances. Cut a 2-by-6 to the desired lengths, and attach the lumber to the base of the cabinet. Wearing eye protection, use a pneumatic nailer to assemble all the pieces. Since the countertop will cover any holes you knock in the wall, you can use a hammer and nail to locate wall studs if you don’t have a stud finder. Make a mark at the location for your nailer and draw a level line across the length of the wall.
Secure three 2-by-4’s to another nailer and then secure this assembly to the wall and on top of the base cabinet to serve as your countertop framing. Wearing safety goggles and a dust mask, cut the ½-inch plywood to size with a circular saw. Drill an opening in the cutout with a drill and paddle bit, and then cut out the opening with a jigsaw. Use a piece of tile when installing the trim so that the trim will be flush with the tiles when they’re installed. Draw a line and begin setting tiles into the adhesive, using plastic spacers to keep them evenly spaced. Mix the grout according to the manufacturer’s directions; use a mixing paddle and a drill to make mixing easier. After the grout begins to cure, wipe across the surface with a wet sponge to remove any of the excess grout along the edge of the tiles and to clean up the countertop. Learn how to store laundry supplies to keep your space fresh as clean clothes. In this fantasy world, we’re guessing that all of your laundry accouterments would be as luxe as these splurge-worthy picks.
Mommy Monday DIY Washer and Dryer Counter Top For Under $40! by couponkarma.com
Trouble was, we couldn’t go with a standard counter top because our washer & dryers were too deep for a standard counter top, so we toyed with the idea of having a custom counter top made for our space, but that just sounded too expensive for my taste. Did you make a cut out in the counter or are they somehow tucked behind the counter?
We also used two pieces of 1×1 wood to brace the countertop, we set them back so you can’t even seen them from the front.
It might make it easier to switch the loads over as well, because you won’t be walking around the washer door to get to the dryer. This is the exact dilemma we have right now with out front loaders. Does anybody have any suggestions about how to hide the pipes and hoses behind my washer and dryer?
DIY Built In Washer + Dryer by crazy-wonderful.com
I think you can totally make this work with a sink nearby!
There’s no problem with it shimmying because the table is built up from the machines instead of resting on them. If they need to do a repair, they’d have to pull the appliances out to access the backs but my guess is they would have to do that whether or not they were built in. My husband suggested that we needed venting for the washer and drier. The dryer is still set up to vent out through the normal/proper ductwork and there’s actually more space between the walls and above the machines than it appears as the white side trim and horizontal piece that runs under the front of the countertop are only facing pieces and don’t extend the full depth. I should call this project a built in washer and dryer or a washer and dryer folding table.

I could have not put things on top, but it was my catch all and that’s just the way it was. I couldn’t lean over them to get to the cabinet above without pulling out a step stool. The wood is already and waiting in the garage, just need to find some time to get to it. I have the same problem in my laundry room with the hose box and outlets showing. Nothing drove me more crazy than loosing a sock or something to the abyss behind or in between the machines. It keeps me from having to drag all the unfolded laundry to my bedroom for folding. Do you have to take them out, disessemble the table, or is there a solution?
The back 2/3rds of the table top isn’t attached so it can be taken off for quick/easy access to electrical outlets and the connections.

I especially like how you dealt with the connections being higher than the washer.

With in the year it would not start up when pushing the start button. If we let it set for a few months unplugged we could some times get it to start and then it would work for 5-10 cycles and then go on vacation again. I t was just easier to go to the basement and use the old washer and dryer. During the wash/dry cycle, when it changes to the dry cycle we open the draining tube to remove excess water. But the sweet news, the issue with the lint in the door gasket, really a pain to clean out if hot or cold. Building Cabinets To Hide A Washer and Dryer by homeinformationguru.com
While this technique can certainly be used in a laundry room, it can be especially useful when you don’t have a dedicated laundry.
You can build cabinets for any style of washer and dryer, although the technique works best with front-loading machines. Make sure to allow enough space between the washer and dryer and the back wall. Using graph paper to sketch the dimensions can help you plan the pieces you’ll need. For a side-by-side front loading washer and dryer set, two separate doors work best. If the countertop surface needs to lift up, create a separate frame for it.Use thinner lumber to frame the doors and top, to make them lightweight and easy to use. Screws are the best fasteners to use, because they provide greater strength. When constructing the top lid, using a laminate surface on the top will create a useful countertop area. If using stain and varnish, be sure to use a water-resistant product, such as an interior polyurethane varnish. You’ll need some basic construction and wood-working skills to make your own cabinets. You’ll want to allow at least four extra inches of width, as well as at least eight extra inches of depth.
You should also allow a couple of extra inches of height. Using your finished dimensions as a guide, create a frame that will accommodate the washer and dryer, using screw fasteners. However, screws should be countersunk and covered to create a neat exterior appearance. Keep the lid as light as possible to make it easy to open and close. A gloss or semi-gloss enamel paint in a light shade will make the cabinets bright, cheerful and very durable. Let dry, add door handles, and enjoy your newly disguised washer and dryer.

Of course you’d have to stain and poly them and with a different species the stain might not be a perfect match but it would be fine. I think they will tie together well and then tie in with the silver in the dining room. If the edge bothers you, then you can simply cut and nail a 1×2 to the edges. Also, for future projects to avoid splotches on soft woods, using wood conditioner is a must. I just took out a chandelier light as not enough light for me.
Issues With Undercounter Washer and Dryer Installation by homeguides.sfgate.com
Preparation is the key to a successful installation, so you don’t wind up with a washer and dryer setup that doesn’t meet your needs or fit in your space.
You need room to work in the confined space or you won’t be able to safely and effectively install the equipment. If the hot and cold water faucets are beneath the countertop, attach the water hoses before inserting the washer under the counter. Similarly, attach the dryer vent and the electrical cord or gas fittings before you insert the dryer. Install wood blocking to support the counter because you don’t want the countertop to rub against or rest on the machines. Without sufficient space for vibration, your two appliances will rub and bump against each other, resulting in unwanted friction and noise. With controls commonly along a back panel, such an installation makes use of them difficult and impractical. Otherwise, you’ll bang up your knuckles and be forced to support the washer lid with one hand as you add or remove laundry.
You might run into problems if the opening under your countertops isn’t deep enough to accommodate both appliances. Take careful measurements, including the height, width and depth of each appliance, and measure the opening under the countertops. Install the washer’s drain hose in the standpipe, floor drain or tub drain, and plug the three-prong cord into the electrical outlet before you slide the washer in place. Ensure that you have sufficient mobility so you can use pliers to tighten the hose couplings to the faucet threads. Otherwise, you’ll have to raise your countertops to fit over your appliances. The undercounter area must be large enough to allow the doors of both the washer and dryer to open freely. This is especially important with an undercounter installation because removing and re-situating the appliances is a big hassle. There isn’t usually enough space between the underside of the countertops and the top of the machine to easily insert and remove clothing or linens. Unless you have countertops that slide or fold open, avoid placing a top-load washer under a counter.
Wood Countertop DIY Scavenger Chic by scavengerchic.com
First step was to decide what my countertop would be made of. These were all nailed down with a nail gun using 1 inch finishing nails, a lot of them. I scribbled on the back with pencil, this will act as carbon paper. Kind of light, but if you look closely you’ll see the outline of my logo. I prefer to use the electric version, my handy dandy palm sander again. I used a small brush dipped in black paint and lightly painted those spots, in the direction of the wood grain, letting some of the wood shine through. I cut all the wood to the proper length at this point and mitered the edges of my trim boards. Could have used screws, or hammer by hand, but a nail gun is soooo much more fun and quick. If you have a kreg jig, this would be a great time to use it. Traced around the lettering with pen to transfer the logo outline to my boards. I don’t know why it has taken me so long to get a countertop in there. Or if you are in need of a crate and can’t find just the right size check out how to make a pallet crate with any logo here. If you have room, you could also attach a post in the front left.
Installing A Countertop Over Washer and Dryer by diychatroom.com
I want a better way to attack the counter to my frount loader. I just tiled the laundryroom floor a year ago so a little sub wall is not somthing i want to do also space is limited. That way you won’t have to replace the countertop if you have to replace your washer. I also have two cabinets that will be going above the counter. Then run a ledger around the back & sides and rest the counter on that. So make sure whatever hoses are in there end up being long enough to allow you to pull out the washer under your counter arrangement.

When you don’t have anything over the washer you can sometimes just reach over and down to get to the hose. In that case you’d have to be able to pull the washer out, all the way to get to the back. But when you replace them you’d need to feed them back up from the washer to the taps. Even with the braided ones you still want to be planning on regular replacements. I already have a great space for them, which was originally built for a bath enclosure. The old owner took out the interior stairs to the basement as there is a door to the basement that leads to the outside. I asked how they did it and the answer i got was they hot glued it to the fake washer and dryer. I was thinking of running a suport ledg along the wal/ and then because its beach one using silacone to attach it there. I was thinking about running a support ledge along the three walls and then setting a top on it without screwing it down. The dimensions are 60″ wide and 38″ from the back wall to the door frame seen on the right. Will the support ledge work or will it still sag in the front?
You need to be able to easily replace them on a regular basis. The last thing you’d want to do is put the counter in there permanently and then not have long enough hoses to get the washer out. This means unscrewing them from both the wall fixture and the back of the washer. Now, you could use short hoses, just long enough to reach from the wall to the washer. The same thing could be said of the dryer if it runs on gas. Make sure you can either remove the top or slide the machines out.
We have a granite top on the vanity, so what would you suggest for the top above the washer and dryer?
The water box (shut off valves, and drain pipe) will be on the side wall to the right of the washer and dryer. They did this to put the washer and dryer in its place – so essentially making what used to be a stairwell into a closet.
I Built and Installed A Countertop Over My Washer Dryer : DIY by reddit.com
We painted it and an oak 1×3″ we were going to use as a front finish piece. There were 8 screws on the left support, 4 on the small one in the back, 10 on the big one on the back, and 10 on the right support. The solid door is 1 3/4″ thick so it’s very unlikely it’ll sag. It’s possible your machines will be noisier or have issues with overheating. Do you find it difficult to get in and out of the washer and dryer with them at this height?
I think this is a good compromise, slightly lower washer/dryer, but a usable workspace.Neither of us have issues getting stuff into or out of the washer/dryer. I measured, remeasured, and reremeasured and finally made the cut on the door. I wanted to share with y’all, it gives us a ton of needed storage space and makes the laundry room look much nicer than it used to. I feel like using doors for odd jobs may be somewhat commonplace. I could see myself making a desk for my studies out of a solid door at some point. I couldn’t find butcher blocks big enough and they were quite pricey.
In the end the door was a good balance of cheap, strong, and easy to acquire. An additional benefit to using the door was the surfaces have an unfinished veneer applied so all we had to do was lightly sand it then start painting. It’d be a heck of a lot to lift up and hold in place for a little bracket or whatever you’d use to hold it up. I made it about 8″ deep, which is deep enough to hold detergent and other supplies, but not so deep that it interferes with controls. This was used in my first attempt at cutting out a notch in the back of the door for the washer hookups. It might be worth looking into the used market for them as a means to pay for the rest of the project. I imagine they’d be easier to use if they were higher, but if they were, a countertop would be a little too high to be usable.

And in case you were wondering if we were still loving the stacked plywood look, the answer is a resounding yes. If you are using screws, just make sure that they aren’t placed where you need to make your cuts!
That said, if you want your stained piece to look like professionally finished wood, you should stain, then wait until it is completely dry to sand it. Is it sturdy enough of a surface for sitting if we come up with legs for a bench?
You’ve used the plywood to add extra shelving and make a rolling table. What a great laundry room addition to remove the visual clutter of detergent bottles!
I was wondering your thoughts on using these countertops for a kitchen. They were sanded, stained and polyurethaned …..about 6 coats in all with hand sanding between coats as you recommend. I had never heard of this method before and it was a suggestion of my contractor. Have not gotten that done but am not in the process of doing it again. I would send you a picture but don’t know how to get it onto this page. Factor that in with the 2 week turn around and it was even more far fetched. Don’t miss any of the other tutorials in this series!
That means you can’t sand it too deeply or it will rip up the veneer layer. Once you have stained, protect with the finish of your choice. I had a front loader for the first and only time ever!
I would never have guessed it was plywood – it is such a great fit for the space!
I really want to make this idea work for a kitchen control 🙁 it’s just so gosh darn beautiful!
