There are several ways to completely transform your current laminate surfaces on the cheap. To refinish kitchen countertops, you’ll first want to make any repairs to the existing surface (chips, nicks or stains) by filling them in with an epoxy putty or by sanding down the stain. Expect the process to take anywhere from a weekend to a week, depending on the amount of surface. While (relatively) quick and painless fixes include painting the countertops in a faux granite pattern, or even adding on a sheet of laminate overlay (think granite- or metallic-like finishes) that sticks on to your existing counters, one of the most stylish options is refinishing or redoing kitchen countertops.

Another option is to trowel the concrete surface, which allows you to create unique hand-crafted textural effects. Polishing can also be used to expose decorative aggregate, glass, or stone within the concrete, resulting in terrazzo-like finishes.

Similar effects can be achieved by hand packing the concrete into the form, using contrasting colors to create the veining. To create distinct board lines, you can sawcut straight lines into the concrete surface after it’s cast. For a more natural, low-luster finish, hand sand the concrete or only polish the surface lightly. The process begins by seeding the concrete countertop mix with pieces of decorative colored stone or glass. The exposed aggregate will be more noticeable if it contrasts with the concrete color, such as using bits of white marble in a charcoal-gray countertop. If you want to achieve an ultra-smooth, seamless surface, then polishing or sanding the concrete after it’s cast is the best approach. Some specialized prepackaged concrete mixes allow you to achieve distinctive veining effects when the concrete is cast. Veined finishes can also be produced by casting voids into the concrete and then filling them in later with colored grout. If the countertop has seams, you can make them less noticeable by hiding them in the veining. The roughness of the unfinished wood imparts a distinct wood-grain texture in the concrete surface. Use a combination of integral color and topical stains to replicate the realistic color variations of weathered wood.

These finishes often look like natural stone because they are more variegated and have greater textural depth. Apply a low-luster or penetrating sealer to the countertop surface to maintain a natural look. Choose organic, earth-toned color schemes, such as natural gray, brown or sandy beige. The gloss level can range from low luster to ultra-shiny, depending on the degree of polishing. For the look of white marble or porcelain, use a titanium-white concrete mix containing white silica sand. After the countertop is cast, going over the surface with a grinder will expose the aggregate and give it a gem-like luster. To enhance the gem-like sparkle of exposed aggregate, seal the surface with a high-gloss sealer.

How To Repair and Refinish Laminate Countertops by

Choose the color that most closely matches your countertop color. Put the paste on the stain and let it work for a couple of hours — don’t rub. For more stubborn stains, try a little nail polish remover on a clean rag (use white rags so you won’t get fabric color on the countertop). Repair chips and large cracks (more than 1/8-inch wide) with a two-part epoxy putty. Apply painter’s tape to everything you don’t want to paint, including your sink, faucets and backsplash.

Take your time and make sure there’s good adhesion in all those little places, such as where a faucet base touches the countertop. Wipe up the residue with a tack rag and check for any missed spots with a flashlight. To get a granite look, you’ll apply at least three different shades of paint, working from light to dark, or vice versa. Add subsequent layers with a sponge, dabbing in random patterns. After painting is complete, apply at least two acrylic polyurethane topcoats, using a dense foam roller. Most kits include pre-selected paints so the final color blend is realistic. The kit features stone-like chips that are sprinkled onto the wet surface of the base layer to create a granite-like texture. This kit includes a diamond-embedded sanding block specifically made for thorough de-glossing.

You can apply the sheets in minutes, although good surface prep is vital, as any defects will show through the sheet.

You get all the benefits — no tear-out, fast turnaround and a complete budget-friendly countertop redo — at a slightly higher price. Not only can your counters be a different color, but they can even look like an entirely new material.

Here are some tips on how to choose a countertop that’s right for you. Here’s how to properly clean ceramic tile and grout to keep counters beautiful and germ-free.

You can repair your chipped and aging laminate countertops using simple techniques and, in some cases, common household products you probably have around the house. Once hardened, you won’t have the opportunity to sand any excess without damaging the surrounding laminate, so fill each blemish carefully, and don’t overfill. Stains can be removed using a paste made from baking soda and water. Faux granite is one of the most forgiving of all decorative painting projects — the mottled look is easy to get using sponges and a dabbing motion, and you can just keep going until it looks right. Make no mistake — applying painter’s tape is more of an art than folks often realize. To ensure maximum adhesion for the base coat, de-gloss the entire countertop with 100-grit sandpaper.

The first coat is your base coat and should completely cover all surfaces. Apply coats while the previous layer is still slightly damp. Add grain with a feather lightly swiped across still-damp paint. Add veins with a fine-tipped artist brush dipped in a contrasting color — pure white or black are good choices. Lightly sprinkle pinches of gold or silver glitter flakes over the last coat of paint (but before applying the protective topcoats). This product offers thicker coatings than typical countertop refinishing products, and the finish is heat-resistant — a rarity for painted finishes. A critical step is de-glossing the existing surface to ensure good adhesion. De-glossing your countertop surface (and wiping up any dust with a tack rag) helps long-term adhesion. Here’s how to safely remove dirt, stains and etching from this elegant stone.

We share what you need to know about epoxies at the end of this post.It produces a textured stone-like finish on laminate surfaces. Each one produces a stain, water, and mildew resistant surface. The small countertop kit covers up to 30 square feet, and the large one covers up to 50 square feet. A couple of coats will give any surface a glossy and virtually indestructible finish. Rest assured, there are plenty of ways you can transform that old surface into a new one without busting your budget. The one we recommend was made specifically for countertops and tables and is safe to apply in odor sensitive environments like small living spaces and restaurants.

Polished Concrete by

During concrete polishing the surface is processed through a series of steps (in general a minimum of 6 grinding steps of processing is considered polished concrete) utilizing progressively finer grinding tools. Polished concrete floors are considered low-maintenance, as they are more durable and easier to clean than many flooring options. Polished concrete reduces dust mite and allergen problems, and does not support mold growth. Polished concrete flooring is hard wearing and will not chip or dent like softer surfaces such as timber and tiles. A concrete floor that has been hardened and polished will have an extremely long life expectancy compared to other flooring. Heavy-duty polishing machines, for example concrete grinder, are used to gradually grind down surfaces to the desired degree of shine and smoothness. Polished concrete floor installation is categorized into two types: new floors, and retrofit floors. The concrete should always be professionally finished with power trowels and properly cured with water for 7 days.

The concrete aggregate is typically the normal aggregates used in the region mostly 20mm, but almost anything can be used. Builder needs to be aware as early as possible if the concrete is to be polished so that the final finish is of the best quality. If the existing concrete is in good condition the surface can be polished to just about any standard. These diamonds are impregnated inside a metal- or resin-bonded segment. A number of densifiers can be used; these consist of a lithium, potassium or sodium silicates. Typically this system is referred to as a “half polish” as generally the surface is only processed through 3 steps of grinding (half the steps of what a real polished concrete floor is processed). However, it does provide a similar look to polished concrete and may be appropriate in small spaces with little expected foot traffic or wear on the slab. Grouting and patching may be required to fill any voids, holes, cracks or imperfections. The step at which the densifier is applied is determined by hydration of the slab. The concrete densifier/hardener penetrates into the concrete and creates a chemical reaction to help harden and dust-proof the surface. The grinding tools are progressive grits of industrial diamonds in a bonded material such as metal/hybrid/resin often referred to as diamond polishing pads. Anecdotal evidence suggests highly reflective polished concrete reduces lighting needs and can improve natural lighting. There is never a need for wax to be added as it will only dull the finish. The closest equivalent example would be polished granite or marble. The concrete should always be poured full depth to take advantage of the concretes full structural strength and to also help in preventing cracks. Polishing should not begin until the concrete is fully cured (generally 28 days). The finished surface of the concrete will need to be finished to a high standard to facilitate the polishing process. During the finishing phase any decorative aggregates such as seashells, glass chips or even metal car parts can be dropped into the surface of the concrete. If the existing floor slab is in poor condition it can be cut or grinded and the natural aggregate can be featured as the “exposure level”. Typically the diamonds’ grit size will double once the first grind has been carried out. The polishing process begins with a 50-grit diamond resin pad instead of a metal segment. Throughout the process a densifier is used to harden the concrete surface, which allows the concrete to be polished. But, is also breathable and not a sealer (as a sealer actually seals the concrete 100% and does not allow vapor transmission). However, it does provide a similar look to polished concrete and may be appropriate in some areas. While there is some level of refinement to the surface, the topical (chemical spray or rolled on) solution and will wear off and need to be replaced depending on floor traffic. While there may be some level of surface preparation this is a topical (chemical spray or rolled on) solution and will wear off and need to be replaced depending on floor traffic. The surface is then cleaned and prepared for the application of either a gloss or matte surface coating, or an impregnating enhancing sealer. A densifier can be applied once the concrete is opened up and in a condition to readily accept the chemical.

Simply roll on each layer as directed to achieve decorative and lasting functional surfaces fast. However, about a month later a plug-in air freshner leaked and disolved the new surface!

I always use potholders under the pans to protect the counter top. Easy to install and i still love the look and the fact that we saved hundreds by doing it ourselves. I was looking for an easy, economical update for my ugly brown counters; this is a great budget friendly solution. I cook every day and have not had any issues with heat damage or staining from any pots, crock pot or toaster oven. Then the other key is in sanding this layer down enough to both expose the minerals in the coating and to get the surface as smooth as you want the final outcome to be. I ended up using craft glue to stick it back to the counter and then caulked along the edge. I was glad to have an electric sander as there is quite a bit of it to do.

Everyone that has seen it has loved it and has asked what product it is. Our coverage area was just around the maximum square footage so we bought 2 kits. There was no difference in application technique or sanding prep. My daughter uses this bathroom and has left water soap hair care products and other products in a certain section and this has work through the top and crackled the product. The complete process is fast and simple, requiring no special tools or time-consuming creative skills to achieve outstanding results.

We used a orbital sander and 120 grit as well as a sanding block for edges corners. The final texture is different from normal countertops, but it is functional and looks good. Just make sure you are liberal with the stone coating (step 2), both coats, to get a nice thick application of this layer. Don’t think that the surface will get smoother just by applying the clearcoat, make sure you sand the stonecoat to your liking both for looks as well as smoothness. It will make a terrible edge & pull off the coating from the counter. I actually had a little left to do another small bathroom in one of my other properties.

Our client was on a tight budget for their kitchen remodel so we agreed to try this product.

We watched the video online twice and read all the instructions and began the application process. The entire thing failed to adhere to the substrate, which is laminate. Since this was our last day on site, we had to scramble to find pre-made counters to install. The 2 small sections performed well, but the large counter had the peeling. I love the finish in light white with bits and pieces of color. I feel i can add more coats to fix this but she is a teenager so i will wait.

We covered very old laminate and did not expect such beautiful results. It is a small galley condo kitchen and now it looks inviting and lively. Thanks for a great product and excellent customer service!

I taped all around the counter, put plastic around the cabinets, and cleaned and scuffed up the countertop. They were in average shaped for their age but the new finish makes them look new again. It has a very nice stone appearance and is 100% better than what we had. Make sure you have a good utility knife for cutting away the masking tape you use. This was very easy to do and saved me a ton of money and work over other alternatives. There was enough product to do both the kitchen and the bathroom countertop. It was easy, affordable and the product performed exactly like the ad said. The product was truly amazing and i shall recommend it to all who compliment my kitchen countertops. I took my time with this refinishing project and am absolutely loving the results!

A better product for half the price is not something you find very often.

We needed to update our counter top and did not want to spend the “big dollars” for an updated finish.
