Obviously, a more dense fireback will absorb more heat than thinner, stainless firebacks. Initially, you will have to ensure that the fireback and its corresponding boot supports will not encroach or interfere with the required clearances for safe installation of your gas log set into your fireplace opening. If this is added to a fireplace opening and these clearances are not met, it is important to explain why these clearances exist. If these components were to warp or crack from excessive heat, this may result in a gas leak (and death).

This is why special care needs to be taken when placing a fireback inside a fireplace opening when gas logs are to be used. If the fireback and its corresponding boots (support) cannot be placed safely at this 2″ distance, a fireback should not be used. Since gas log sets require a specific firebox depth, the installation of a fire back might negatively impact the compatibility of a log set and fireplace. With a closed combustion wood stove, you would not feel the benefit as much as you would with an open hearth fireplace, which combines with the product to benefit you much more. If they are needed, how much height do they add to the entire system? Depending on the fireback feet chosen, you might add between 1 and 3 inches of height to the entire fireback.

They should not be used in direct vent models, as they can cause issues with overheating. How does it compare to glass doors in keeping out the cold in the winter? It also provides protection for the back wall from logs that may be tossed into the fireplace. A gasketed door assembly or sealed damper should definitely be considered for that purpose. While they have the potential of adding to the elegance and beauty of your fireplace, they more importantly protect your fireplace; this long-term protection will save you money by reducing the need for repairs and increasing energy efficiency.

These solid metal fireplace fireback plates protect the masonry of your fireplace as well as reflect heat back into your home to increase energy efficiency. Do cast iron firebacks put out more heat than black steel firebacks? There are other factors to consider with regards to the thickness of the fireback itself. It is also very important to note that, while there are stainless firebacks made specifically for use with gas log sets, there are some safety concerns when using a fireback with a gas log set. Because manufactured gas fittings and controls will have a maximum temperature they can withstand, the common 2″ clearance requirement is so that the gas controls and fittings can “breathe” to avoid failure. Also, extra care needs to be taken when selecting a fireback to use, considering all gas log set burners will require 2″ of air space around the burner for safe operation.

Ortal Fireplaces by godbyhearth.com

They offer both catalog models and the ability to fully customize a fireplace. Ortal utilizes a series of blowers inside their fireplaces that move air between the double glass panels. This provides the freedom to place the fireplace in areas that would otherwise be prohibited with traditional venting systems. These fireplaces differ from the three-sided space creator as they are normally installed against a continuous wall. These stand alone models offers an industrial style with the flue pipe remaining exposed to the room.

Ortal was one of the first manufacturers to create a double glass enclosure that met these new guidelines. This cools the outer glass temperature to meet the new requirements.

How To Redo A Marble Fireplace by homeguides.sfgate.com

When the marble becomes discolored, cracked or outdated, however, it can also detract from the rest of the room. Clean the marble of any soot and run a belt sander over it to roughen the surface, particularly if the original marble is polished. If you are installing new marble, seal it well before you grout it. Allow the base coat to dry, then paint in veins to give the fireplace a new “marble” appearance.

One way to redo a marble fireplace is to replace the existing marble with new marble slabs. The surround can be cut into one large slab that has no seams when installed. Depending on what the original tiles were installed on, you may be able to install the new ones immediately.

Install new marble or use another type of tile to completely change the look. Apply a cement-based mortar to both the existing marble tiles and to the backs of the new tiles. Alternatively, use a faux-marbling technique by rolling on two colors. The slabs can be made out of any marble, which can be viewed and selected at a stone yard. Break off a section of the old marble, using a hammer and chisel, then pry off the rest with a pry bar inserted beneath the edges of each tile. Alternatively, you may need to hang new cement backerboard before installing the new tiles.

I Have A Wooden Fireplace Surround A Marble Hearth and A Marble Back Panel. I by justanswer.com

I have a wooden fireplace surround, a marble hearth and a marble back panel. I have a wooden fireplace surround, a marble hearth and a marble back panel.

It cannot sit against the wall because there is a few inches width in the wooden surround so would have to sit against the surround. The fan worked in the beginning, but has quit working a couple of years ago. We’d like to cover the brick with drywall and remove the brick hearth and add a mantle and short bookcases. I have purchased a marble hearth back panel and wooden fire surround. We want to remove the hearth from our living room fireplace and update it. It appears to have been attached to the wall by nothing more than some sort of adhesive.

Would it leave a gap between the wood surround and the marble? Whilst the surround fits against the wall of the house, there is a width to it of around 5 inches.

The electric fire would then fit into the cut out of the back panel.

We have put the hearth in however the problem is with the back panel. There are cracks in my sheetrock running from the top of the fp diagonally upward and away from the fp. I want to cover up indoor brick gas burning fireplace with dry wall for a smooth finish and then build a mantel on top of that. It’s about six inches above the floor, and we would like to install a tiled area at the same level as the floor.
